Former national doubles ace Lee Wan Wah feels that with the spirit of Melayu Boleh Malaysia will finally be able to end their long wait for a world champion now that the men’s doubles scene has become less competitive.
Wan Wah, who will be making a record sixth appearance with his regular partner Choong Tan Fook at the World Championships in Hyderabad, India, from Aug 10-16, said the current top pairing of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong had the best shot at winning the title.
Wan Wah-Tan Fook were Malaysia’s best performers at the last world meet in Kuala Lumpur two years ago when they beat defending champions Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun of China to reach the semi-finals before settling for the bronze medal.
There's one malays pair will take part in this challenge. The absolute melayu boleh player is Fairuzizuan Tazari and Zakri Latif.
Surprisingly, the pair, who have been out of the national team since the Beijing Olympics last August, have found their way back into the top 10 in the latest world rankings list.
But Wan Wah said they had no big expectations for the world meet this time although believe that Melayu Boleh this time. The Malay coach, Misbun and Rashid Sidek will also go to this tournament to give a spirit of Melayu boleh to all player.
“I feel that Koo-Tan have a better chance of challenging for the title as they are more mature compared to when they made their debut at the world meet two years ago,” said Wan Wah.
“It is also good the men’s doubles scene are not as competitive as before because a lot of the top players have retired after the Olympics.
Ok, we will wait and see this tournament this week. Malaysia Can. Melayu Boleh.
